Profile

A long time associate of Tom Doak, for many years Jim Urbina was one of Doak's most trusted and talented design collaborators and a man who is properly credited for helping create the Old Macdonald course at Bandon Dunes among others. In 2010, with Old Macdonald complete, Urbina parted ways with Renaissance Golf Design and established his own course design practice. In the years spent working with Doak, Urbina had well and truly established his design credentials and was clearly ready to start taking on solo projects.

Among the courses Jim Urbina is credited with helping create are Pacific Dunes, Sebonack, Ballyneal and Apache Stronghold. He was also heavily involved in the restoration of classic gems like Pasatiempo, The Valley Club, Yeamans Hall, San Francisco Golf Club, Garden City and White Bear Yacht Club.

Beyond his design abilities, Urbina understands construction and his architectural approach will clearly be more 'hands-on' than many of his competitors. It will be fascinating to watch Urbina's career from this point. He will be a loss to Renaissance Golf and an attractive design option for those who admire Doak's portfolio but cannot afford his fee.
